OVERVIEW

D-Day to Victory Interactive is an online documentary experience recreating the WWII final assault on Nazi-occupied Europe. A transmedia extension to the History Television and Channel4 documentary series, the site features many additional and poignant veteran interviews, and traces the Allied journey from the D-Day invasion of Normandy to the siege of Berlin. The site also allows users to engage in virtual commemoration and online sharing of several veterans’ stories who may be telling them for the last time.

PROJECT BRIEF

The producers of D-Day to Victory wanted their audience to learn more about the WWII Allied invasion’s key battles and commemorate and share stories of heroes from different countries, including Canada, the United States, Britain and Russia.

The main technical objectives were to transform the show’s groundbreaking real weaponry and explosives demos into 3D animation and create an innovative graphical map interface that includes a narrative walkthrough.

THE SOLUTION

We created a site where users virtually follow the Allies on their path to Berlin and explore key events that led to victory. A voiceover narrator expresses the emotions and physical impact of war while guiding users from one scene to the next in their journey.

Six innovative 3D scenes visualize and illustrate the sounds of “exploded views” of the attacks —from an underwater mine destroying a landing craft near Normandy to a Berlin building under fierce attack.

Within each 3D scene, users can access hundreds of original veteran video interviews in what is a comprehensive and realistic documentation of the war with accounts of witnessing death and being hit by mines, shells, rockets and grenades. Users are encouraged to commemorate the veteran stories with “interactive poppies” that populate the main interface with virtual commemorations. Users can click on any of the poppies to view the thoughts submitted by others.

Veterans stories are coupled with biographies, artifacts and personal photos users can share with others online through Facebook, Twitter and other social networks. We deep linked site sections and stories for easier shareability and more accurate metrics tracking.
